Beanstalk Charity

We believe life is better when everyone can read well and express themselves with confidence. Sadly, last year over 170,000 children left primary school unable to read to the expected level.

Barnardos

Charity set up for vulnerable children

Barnardos

We help children through the trauma of sexual abuse and exploitation.

We provide support for young people in care – and we don’t forget about them when they leave the care system.

We give children caring for a loved one the help and support they deserve.

And that’s not all. Our specialist workers support families through domestic abuse, mental health problems, prison sentences, asylum seeking and much more.

We also amplify the voices of young people to influence Government on the issues that affect their lives, fighting their corner and making sure their voices are heard.

The scale of what we do may be big and complex, but our aim is simple – to provide the best outcome for every child, no matter who they are or what they have been through.

The Childhood Trust

Charity set up for children in poverty

The Childhood Trust

The Childhood Trust funds grass roots charities and their projects to alleviate the impact of child poverty in London. Every child has the right to a safe and happy childhood so we partner with and fund the very best initiatives and projects.

We use our funds to generate and match other donations, primarily through our online fundraising campaigns and fundraising partnerships. Since our inception in 2013 we have been able to multiply funds donated to us by an average factor of 4.69, meaning that for every £1 dontated to us, we've generated £4.69 of funding for projects supporting children. In total, since 2013 our matched giving campaigns have raised £14.8m.

We make grants to proven charities that are working directly with disadvantaged children. Our work is themed across three areas; meeting children's practical needs, supporting children's emotional needs and inspiring children with new experiences and opportunities.

Our support across these themes promotes the development of strong foundations for learning, resilience and aspiration. The impact of our grants is externally monitored and since we started we have helped more than 180,000 children through our partnerships with over 150 charities throughout London.

The Childrens Literacy Charity

Our specially-trained literacy tutors work with the most disadvantaged children in society to help them close their literacy gap. We are unique in this respect.

The Childrens Literacy Charity

We work closely with schools and communities in London and Manchester to identify the children who have the greatest need and who will benefit most from our expertise. In 2017/18, 91% of the children we supported were either eligible for Pupil Premium, or had a Special Educational Need (SEN), or spoke English as an Additional Language (EAL) (which can be a barrier to learning when coupled with economic disadvantage).

In schools, our support is provided through our one-to-one literacy interventions which take place twice a week in our Literacy Labs. These interventions are delivered by trained tutors using a systematic phonics-based programme tailored to meet the individual child’s needs. We place a strong emphasis on creating a nurturing, safe environment which allows children to tackle new challenges. As a child gains confidence with learning, they build resilience, their expectations of themselves are raised and their belief in a positive future is strengthened.

Inspire!

Our vision is for all young people to reach their full potential, realise their ambitions and build fulfilling careers and lives.

The London Borough of Hackney and surrounding areas have seen a vast improvement in academic achievement since we began in 2004. However, youth unemployment in London remains high. Many young people still lack the knowledge, skills and aspirations needed to build fulfilling careers.
